That said, freelancing can be high-paying. “I have made about $100 an hour in my business before,” said Margarita Curiel, who runs Curiel Design Studio. But make sure you’re taking the right steps to ensure your success (more on this below).
How much money do freelancers make?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual income for computer network designers was $63,200 in 2012. Graphic designers averaged $70,980 in 2012; web developers averaged $78,870, and software developers averaged $114,080 that same year.
But many freelancers work more than 40 hours a week, and these professionals tend to make even more money. “I am a full-time freelancer and I make about $100 an hour,” said Alexandra Levit, who writes about career. “And that’s working from home on my own schedule. I love it!”
Freelancers on the West Coast generally earn more than those living elsewhere. According to Elance-oDesk, a platform for freelancers and businesses to connect, the average hourly rate for a web developer in New York City is $40 compared with $66 in San Francisco or $56 in Seattle.

The tools that you’ll use will help you establish a strong online presence and allow you to engage with others so that they can get a word-of-mouth recommendation for your services. Plus, the more people who know about your expertise, the better it will be for you to find clients.
3. Start writing articles
For the first couple of weeks, I would start writing articles about freelancing and how it can help you to get out of a corporate structure and be free from the typical 9-to-5 office job. When I felt confident enough in my skills and reputation, I would start getting commissioned for writing and marketing, and advertising services.
4. Start getting paid:
No matter what you’re doing on freelancing or working with someone else on that project, you will start getting paid. Once I was able to get a client who knew about my work through their friends or family, they started paying me for my services.
